Boris - Nurui Honoo (Afterburner)
I Boris sono una band experimental metal di Tokyo, attiva dal ‘92. Non sembrano voler essere etichettati facilmente sotto un solo genere, risentendo di influenze psychedelic rock, punk, sludge, doom metal, drone, pop, noise, shoegaze e ambient. Hanno ventitré album all’attivo più svariate collaborazioni con altri artisti e sono abbastanza conosciuti anche in America.
La canzone è Nurui Honoo (o Afterburner).

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs - World Is Yours (Full Album)
Hailing from Kobe, Japan, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs (Massu Obu Za Faamentingu Doreggusu) play shoegaze-influenced post rock with some stylistic nods to the choppy post punk rhythms of Gang of Four and the noisy freakouts of Sonic Youth. It’s all wrapped up in an awesomely catchy package thanks to the vocals of Natsuko Miyamoto (bass, vocals) who sounds like a Japanese version of fellow shoegazing power-trio vocalist Caithlin De Marrais (Rainer Maria).
The band’s name, which sounds like some awful bastardization of tofu, admittedly means nothing and was chosen because the band members like how the string of words sounded together. Mass of the Fermenting Dregs also released a self titled 6-song E.P. on AVOCADO Records.

La band di oggi sono gli Elephant Kashimashi (un altro gruppo con “Elephant” nel nome, eh?), alternative rock from Tokyo, baby. Sono riuscito a trovare ben poche informazioni su di loro: so solo che si conoscono dalle superiori e che quando hanno cambiato casa discografica, anche il loro stile è cambiato parecchio.

Boredoms (V∞redoms) - Super æ
I Boredoms (a volte scritto “V∞redoms“) sono un gruppo noise/psichedelico di Osaka, sulle scene da circa trent’anni. Erano partiti come noise punk, poi hanno ricalcato i toni del krautrock più psichedelico e di recente la loro musica è diventata più ambient, minimalista e segnata da ritmi tribali.
Alcuni di loro hanno collaborato con John Zorn, c’è chi ha curato la colonna sonora del film Ichi The Killer, hanno anche altri side-projects, insomma si sono tenuti occupati.
Questa canzone si chiama Super æ (o Super are).

Rize - Lady Love
I Rize potrebbero essere definiti rapcore o nu metal o altrimenti alternative rock. Hanno una certa presenza al di fuori del Giappone, in America e Corea del Sud. Sono apparsi ad un evento di MTV assieme agli Oasis e Jay-Z e al Live 8 assieme ai Linkin Park.
Il frontman Jesse ha anche una carriera parallela da rapper, con la sua “unit” E.D.O.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - G.W.D.
I Thee Michelle Gun Elephant erano una band garage rock formata quando i suoi componenti erano insieme all’università a Tokyo. Il nome che hanno scelto deriva dal titolo di una registrazione di una jam session che un loro amico ha malpronunciato. La registrazione conteneva cover dei Thee Headcoats e dell’album dei The Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette.
Si sono sciolti nel 2003 e nel 2009 purtroppo, il chitarrista Abe è morto.
Questa canzone si chiama G.W.D.

“Ever since I first heard the「ロマンチスト」single, I’ve known that The Stalin were one of the great luminaries of the hardcore and art punk movements, with an incredible sense for crafting brain-worming melodies, entropic chaos, and haunting, elegant, grotesque, exhilarating lyrics which explored in great depth “The Stalin”: behind every perfect, beautiful idea that could save mankind from itself lies a horrific, disgraceful downside. Halos of spent human existence bellow out of the smokestacks of Warsaw like toasts to destitution; mama country and papa dictator betray you just as all of your fellow man in a nation of disarray, and so too your own mother and father; after the words of Nietzsche influence the world to send human beings to the gas chambers and split atoms over the heads of a million all we say is “Bye-Bye Nietzsche, but it was fun, so let’s play again sometime!”; personalities and sanity draining out of the minds of subjugated people as they are sentenced to perform the same mundane routine of picking white onions in Kolkhoz until their final onion-breath is spent from their lungs; every proposed solution from the anarchist, nationalist, stalinist, opportunist, stylist, formalist, liberalist, humanist, socialist, -ist, -ist, -ist, -ist, will only fill those who subscribe with fleeting romantic visions as they fail miserably and find reality only further wrecked for their passions; the pulsing heart at the core of the artist and the dictator are revealed as one and the same tragedy; and at the darkest depths of it, in secret, the greatest, most haunting disgrace of it all: in the intimate dead of night, in the arms of the one we call our lover, we have forgotten what it means to love.
It’s all there. This is not only one of the greatest hardcore bands, punk bands, or 80’s bands, they are simply one of the greatest bands of all time, held back only by the fact that their language is often an alienating one to the western world, thus they remain consigned to their obscure place in the recesses of hardcore punk and ero-guro aficionado notoriety, with perhaps some passing interest from the rare otaku, and largely left in Japan’s own hyper-modernist dust – always seen as a bit too offensive for one extreme and a bit too artsy for the other in their native country to begin with.
Stop Jap Naked doesn’t solve the issue that ザ・スターリン will likely never get their due credit. It does, however, bring the sounds of the seminal classic to an entirely new level, morphing Stop Jap’s greatest –「ロマンチスト」, 「STOP JAP」,「 アレルギーα」,「爆裂ヘッド」,「ワルシャワの幻想」– into magnificent, brain-bashing sonic feats, propelling already classic songs to universal “EVERYONE MUST HEAR THIS” status, and dredging the songs in between up from the muck of fuzz and flat tones and revealing them to be each a piece de resistance in and of themselves. This is the least punk thing I’ve ever said, but taking this 1982 album which I already adored and blowing it up with 2007 production somehow makes the entire thing seem more “real” and visceral – it sounds like listening to a full-on movement rather than another bizarro hardcore release; the make-up and blood and garbage and flung pig-heads no longer feel gratuitous – it all feels like culture in motion. Factor in the only successful Doors cover in existence and a rendition of The Stooges'「NO FUN」that’ll keep you from putting on that Iggy vinyl for weeks and you’ve completely run out of excuses not to be goose-stepping down the sidewalk, pumping your fist, and shouting “STALIN! STALIN! STALIN! STALIN!"”
Buck-Tick - Dress
Buck-Tick - Dress original video di jodesu27 Attivi dall’83, I Buck-Tick sono una band che ha sempre saputo trasformarsi e sperimentare con diversi stili. Hanno cominciato facendo cover punk (ad esempio dei The Stalin) e sono considerati uno dei gruppi “fondatori” del Visual kei. È come se avessero avuto diversi “periodi”: un periodo goth, un periodo cyberpunk, un periodo industrial, un periodo straight rock. Nonostante i cambiamenti, la loro cifra stilistica è sempre riconoscibile. Un’altra costante è la presenza scenica del frontman, Atsushi Sakurai, che aveva cominciato con la band come batterista.
Mi sono fatto consigliare delle canzoni da @kagaminomaede e alcune le posterò nei prossimi giorni.
Per ora vi lascio con Dress, la prima di quelle che ho scelto.
Ningen Isu in Un Programma TV
I Ningen Isu in Miyake Yuuji no Ikasu Bando Tengoku o, più in breve, IkaTen.
Ningen Isu - Rashōmon
La band di oggi sono i Ningen Isu, una band hard rock/heavy metal. Fra i gruppi che citano come ispirazione ci sono Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Budgie e King Crimson. I loro testi sono spesso ispirati alla letteratura giapponese (Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, Osamu Dazai, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa). Anche il loro nome è tratto da un racconto di Edogawa Rampo (La sedia umana). Questa è Rashōmon.
Sheena Ringo - Honnou
L’artista di oggi è Sheena Ringo con Honnou (Istinto). È a tutt’oggi una delle interpreti più riconosciute anche all’estero (assieme a Hikaru Utada e Ayumi Hamasaki), ma meno mainstream. Ha fondato la band Tokyo Jihen (Incidenti di Tokyo). Il suo stile (come spesso accade per gli artisti che scelgo per questa “rubrica”) è variegato, oscillando tra il J-pop e l’alternative rock, da lei ribattezzato Shinjuku kei (Stile di Shinjuku, analogo o opposto al famoso “stile di Shibuya”).
Gargoyle - Gi
La band di oggi sono i Gargoyle con ぎ (Gi). Sono una band thrash metal (formatasi nel 1987) il cui stile incorpora anche elementi folk, progressive e avant-garde.

Tra l’altro, qualche tempo fa (se non avevo le traveggole) hanno fatto vedere un loro video pure su RockTv (che io sappia non avevano mai mostrato video di band giapponesi, vorrà pur dire qualcosa) (anche se non so cosa).
Vola & The Oriental Machine - An Imitation’s Superstar
La band di oggi sono i Vola & the Oriental Machine, un progetto di Ahito Inazawa, batterista di Number Girl e Zazen Boys (dove però canta e suona la chitarra). Questa canzone si chiama An imitation’s superstar.
YuraYura Teikoku - Hakkoutai
La band di oggi sono gli YuraYura Teikoku (”L’impero tremolante”), una band di rock psichedelico che ha calcato le scene dal 1989 al 2010. Questa è 発光体 (”Corpo Luminoso”).
Buffalo Daughter - Great Five Lakes
La band di oggi sono le Buffalo Daughter, un’altra band tutta al femminile (almeno nella loro prima formazione) che ha cominciato nel 1993. Sebbene meno conosciuta all’estero di gruppi come Pizzicato Five e Cibo Matto, la band è comunque considerata molto importante nel panorama dello Shibuya-kei, che spesso interpreta in maniera più rock. Questa è Great Five Lakes.

Plastics - Top Secret Man
La band di oggi sono i Plastics con Top Secret Man. Hanno avuto il loro picco di celebrità tra la fine degli anni 70 e l’inizio degli anni 80. I Talking Heads, i B-52s e i Devo erano fan della band e hanno contribuito a far uscire i loro album negli Stati Uniti. Il duo berlinese Stereo Total ha realizzato una cover della loro canzone “I Love You, Oh No”, reintitolandola “I Love You Ono”.
Zelda - Slaughterhouse
La band di oggi sono le Zelda con Slaughterhouse. Attive tra gli anni ‘80 e ‘90, sono state una delle prime band del Paese tutte al femminile e ad un certo punto, sono entrate nel Guinness dei primati come la più longeva. Come alcune delle ultime band che ho citato in questa rubrica, hanno interpretato e reinterpretato molti generi diversi (per citarne alcuni: new wave, punk, pop, funk e anche la black music).
Hikashu - Puyo Puyo
La band di oggi sono gli Hikashu con Puyo Puyo. Un ensamble underground avant-pop (ci siete ancora?) capitanato da Koichi Makigami (che canta in uno stile che ricorderebbe un po’ il teatro kabuki), conosciuto per il suo stile altamente sperimentale. Rock, jazz, techno, pop? Insomma, hanno coperto un po’ di tutto.

Jun Togawa - Suki Suki Daisuki
Jun Togawa (戸川純) è stata la cantante dei Guernica. Ha cominciato la sua carriera solista proponendosi come una parodia delle idol dell’epoca. Diventava subito ovvio a chi la ascoltava che lei era qualcosa di molto diverso dalle artiste che venivano fuori dalla fabbrica del pop nipponico. Sia come solista che con gli Yapoos (gruppo post-punk/synthpop) ha realizzato musica sperimentale che era una commistione di molti generi e che incorporava di tutto (pop, opera, musica tradizionale, marcette militari ed elettronica) ed esplorava tematiche macabre e inquietanti, influenzate dal movimento dell’ero guro (potete cercare che vuol dire… se avete lo stomaco per farlo).
Guernica - Cafe de Psycho
La band di oggi sono i Guernica con Cafe de Psycho. Sono noti per la loro musica avant-garde eseguita in uno stile da cabaret anni Venti e Trenta però facendo uso anche di strumenti elettronici.
Da notare che il titolo dell’album (改造への躍動) è scritto in orizzontale partendo da destra, come si usava nel Giappone anteguerra (in realtà lo si faceva soprattutto per le insegne di negozi e del cinema; qui ve lo spiegano meglio).
The Willard - Jolly Rogers
I The Willard sono un altro gruppo cult, anch’essi noti per le loro trasformazioni stilistiche. Inizialmente conosciuti per il loro punk che tendeva al pop, sono passati per una fase goth, per poi arrivare a suonare indie rock. La canzone è Jolly Rogers.
The Swankys - Old Fashion
La band di oggi sono i The Swankys con Old Fashion. Hanno cominciato a suonare negli anni ‘80 canzoni influenzate dallo stile dei Sex Pistols, dopodiché sono passati ad un suono più hardcore punk e con degli elementi noise rock, come si può notare da quest’altro pezzo.
Inu - Meshi Kuuna!
Il gruppo di oggi sono gli INU. Fondati nel 1979 da Kou Machida (che adesso fa lo scrittore), sono dei pionieri del punk giapponese. Questo album, Meshi kuuna! (Non mangiare il cibo!), è la loro unica release perché, non molto tempo dopo, si sono sciolti.
Devo ammettere che ho trovato molte poche informazioni su di loro, una cosa comprensibile vista la loro breve carriera. Un blogger li paragona per certi versi ai Clash e ai primi Sonic Youth. In particolare afferma che Yume no naka e gli ricorda Atmosphere.

Onmyouza, i testi delle canzoni
Come ho fatto in passato per i Number Girl, vi voglio indirizzare verso un sito che ha le traduzioni dei testi degli Onmyouza,
perché anche se conoscete la lingua non sono sempre semplici da capire,
coi riferimenti al folklore, al buddismo e al taoismo. Io trovo tutto
questo interessante, spero che piaccia anche a voi.
